Up Next: At Baylor Monday 10 am
Houston: Rice raced to a 7-0 win over Lamar on Thursday to open the Owls' 2023 dual schedule
Doubles: The Owls dropped only two combined games over the three courts to swiftly collect the first point of the day. Federica Trevisan combined with Darya Schwartzman to sweep a 6-0 win at the second line and newcomer Sydney Berlin, playing her first match with the Owls, joined Saara Orav to clinch the initial point, 6-1 at the third line.
Singles: Rice maintained their momentum heading into singles, sweeping all six first sets and closing out five of six matches in straight sets. Senior Maria Budin swiftly upped the lead to 2-0 while dripping only one game at the fourth line. Berlin followed with the third point of the match and Allison Zipoli produced the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Diae El Jardi and Marte Lambrecht followed with straight set wins and Schwartzman closed out the sweep with a three-set win at the fifth line.
Of Note: Zipoli won in her first career appearance at the singles first line. She was 15-4 as a freshman with a 2-1 mark at the second line, 10-1 at the third and 3-2 at the fourth position in the lineup.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "It was a beautiful day to play tennis. I thought the team did a nice job in responding to moving the match up from Saturday and having a few less days of practice. But they have been putting in the hours on the court and I thought we looked prepared and did what we needed to. The season is a marathon and I'm looking forward to getting back on the practice courts to get ready to compete again on Monday."
Up Next: Rice will face Baylor in Waco at 10 a.m. on Monday. The Bears, who open their season on Saturday with a doubleheader against Houston and UTRGV, are receiving votes in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings sponsored by Tennis-Point coaches poll.
