Dual season closes in two weeks at Houston
In Brief: Rice won the first five events on the day and placed second in the remaining three to roll past North Texas, Tulane, and host SMU in the conclusion of their two-day triple dual at the Mustang's Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium on Saturday. Rice defeated SMU 171.5-161.5, North Texas 254-93, and Tulane 247-68 to improve to 4-1 in duals this year.
The Details: Rice opened Saturday morning's competition with a victory in the 200 medley relay as the team of Zoe Spitz, Sini Koivu, Arielle Hayon, and Lily Cramer outdistanced the competition in 1:43.22. Ella Dyson led four Owls to the top four places in the 500 free, winning in 4:53.07, followed by Lauren McDougall (4:53.37), Amelia Kane (4:56.85) and Shannon Campbell (5:04.95). Freshman Lily Cramer took the 200 breast (2:17.71). Spitz (1:58.40) and Imogen Meers (2:00.82) followed her with a 1-2 finish in the 200 back and McDougall added the Owls' fifth consecutive swimming victory by beating Meers to the wall in the 100 free (51.03-51.64). Arielle Hayon finished second in the 200 fly (2:02.65) and Cramer (2:05.08) and Kane (2:08.16) finished second and third in the 200 IM to close out the individual events. Hayon, Meers, McDougall and Spitz closed the event by finishing second in the 200 free relay (1:34.51).
Seth Huston: "I'm really proud of the grit and determination the team showed today on the back half of the meet. Our distance swimmers are racing as good as they have been training. They were fun to watch executing their race strategies. We need to take the momentum of this weekend into the championship portion of our season. There are still a lot of details to address in order to continue to get better."
Up Next: The Owls will close out their dual schedule in two weeks when they make the short trip to Houston to face the Cougars on their Senior Day on January 28. They will be back in the water at SMU's home facility in three weeks for a pre-conference time trial and then again from February 15-18 to compete in their first American Athletic Conference Championships.
