HOUSTON – The Rice women's track and field team saw several highlight performances during their indoor season opener at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational at the University of Houston.
Ginnie Okafor took home first place in triple jump while Tara Simpson-Sullivan picked up a third-place finish in weight throw, with Julie Perez close behind in sixth. Morgan Fey finished fourth in shot put rounding out the top finishes in the field events.
Two Owls finished in the top 10 for the mile with Caitlin Wosika in sixth and Lina Spjut in ninth. Kennedy Gamble finished seventh in the 60-meter dash.
Post-Meet Reaction - Head Coach Jim Bevan
"We started with about half of our team and about half of our events today. We've only been back for four days so this was really like a practice meet for us. Highlights were Ginnie Okafor winning the triple jump with an indoor pr of 12.42 (40' 8.5") and Tara Simpson-Sullivan finishing third in the weight throw with a very good 21.08. In the weight throw that will have her ranked in the country. Kennedy Gamble ran faster in her first meet than she has ever run for an opening meet for her, with a 7.51 in the 60m. We are looking forward to having our entire team competing next Friday at the University of Houston."
