Owls Cruise to Sweep of UC Davis

Rice improves to 4-0 to start season; will face No. 18 Oregon Saturday
EUGENE, OR – The Rice Owls volleyball team notched their third sweep of the season with a straight sets (25-16, 25-17, 25-9) victory Friday evening over UC Davis on day two of the Oregon Invitational.
The Owls (4-0) had five players post five or more kills and hit .275 as a team while limiting UC Davis (3-2) to a .011 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Sahara Maruska led all players with 11 kills (.357) and also totaled 12 digs for her first double-double of the season while fifth year middle blocker Anota Adekunle chipped in 10 kills (.318) for the Owls.
Fifth year setter Carly Graham controlled the offense with 31 assists while also pitching in five kills (.444) and six digs. Junior libero Nia McCardell led the Owls with 15 digs and was part of a defense that allowed just 18 kills.

"I was really pleased with our attack efficiency as a team and the balanced offense Carly ran today. We were able to get multiple people involved in the offense and played a fairly clean match overall. We are going to need much of the same tomorrow against a very strong Oregon team."
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
Rice was firing on all cylinders offensively from the get-go, hitting .333 as a team in the opening frame with 18 kills on 42 attacks in a 25-17 win. Junior outside hitter Danyle Courtley recorded five or her eight kills on the evening in the game while Maruska added four more kills. Freshman Darby Harris totaled seven digs in the frame.
Second Set
Rice only trailed once, 3-2, before winning comfortably 25-17. The Owls closed on a 7-2 run to break away from the Aggies after they had pulled to within 18-15. Adekunle notched five kills on 10 attacks in the set with Maruska adding four more kills. The Owls took advantage of seven UC Davis attack errors.
Third Set
The Owls rushed out to an 8-1 start and never looked back, taking the set 25-9 despite hitting a match-low .214 for the set. The Aggies hit -.208 with just one kill on 24 attacks and committed six attack errors. Rice recorded four aces in the game, two of which coming from Graham.

Rice squares off with the No. 18 ranked Oregon Ducks (3-0) on Saturday with first serve scheduled for 8 p.m. (CT). The two teams met last season in Houston with Oregon winning 3-1 back on Sept. 2, 2021 at Tudor Fieldhouse.
