HOUSTON — 18 home games, including a home non-conference tournament, highlight the 2022-23 Rice Men's Basketball schedule, announced Monday afternoon by Rice Head Coach Scott Pera.
"I'm excited to announce our 2022-23 schedule," said Pera. "For the first time in my six years as Head Coach, we are playing 20 league games, including one in November. The non-conference schedule features tough road games at Pepperdine, Texas State, and Texas. The eight-game non-conference home slate features our own tournament in conjunction with Houston Baptist as well as contests against Prairie View A&M and Northwestern State. We are very anxious to get started and can't wait to see everyone at Tudor Fieldhouse on Nov. 10."
The season begins with an exhibition game against Rockhurst on Oct. 31. Rice will open the regular season on the road for the third time in the last four years when it travels to Malibu, Calif., to face Pepperdine on Nov. 7. It is the second straight year that the Owls open against the Waves. Last year, Rice earned an 82-63 victory. The home schedule then begins on Nov. 10 against crosstown foe St. Thomas.
Rice will begin its C-USA slate on Nov. 15, its earliest date in history, when it travels to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to face Middle Tennessee. It is the second straight year that Rice opens its conference slate on the road, and the sixth time in the last eight seasons. Rice will also host the Blue Raiders on Jan. 11.
This year, Conference USA is moving to a 20-game schedule in which all 11 programs will play each other twice.
The Owls begin a four-game homestand, starting with the Owl Invitational. The tournament will feature Rice, Georgia Southern, Houston Baptist, and Western Michigan. The Owls will host Georgia Southern on Nov. 18 while HBU hosts Western Michigan. The following day, Rice will host Western Michigan and HBU will host Georgia Southern. GSU and WMU will then face off at Tudor Fieldhouse on Nov. 20.
The final contest of the event will take place on Nov. 21, with Rice hosting Houston Baptist in the Darius Lee Memorial Classic, named in honor of HBU's Darius Lee who tragically lost his life this past summer while home in Harlem, N.Y.
Rice closes out the homestand on Nov. 30 when it hosts Prairie View A&M.
The Owls begin December with a two-game road trip, beginning with a trip to Sun Belt Conference regular season champion Texas State on Dec. 4. They follow that by heading to Austin to face Texas on Dec. 12. It will be the first meeting against the Longhorns since 2014.
Rice returns home to host the ninth annual Kid's Day game on Dec. 15 against North American University. Two days later (Dec. 17), the Owls welcome Northwestern State to Tudor Fieldhouse before closing non-conference play on Dec. 19 against Jarvis Christian.
Rice returns to conference play for good with a two-game road trip at WKU (Dec. 29) and UTEP (Dec. 31). The Owls will also host WKU and UTEP on Feb. 18 and Jan. 14, respectively.
Rice's remaining conference opponents will be Louisiana Tech (home Jan. 5/away Feb. 2), UTSA (away Jan. 16/home Feb. 16), North Texas (away Jan. 19/home Feb. 4), Charlotte (home Jan. 26/away Feb. 25), UAB (home Jan. 28/away Feb. 23), Florida Atlantic (away Feb. 9/home Mar. 2), and FIU (away Feb. 11/home Mar. 4).
