HOUSTON — Rice peppered Loyola (Md.) with 21 shots but could not crack goalkeeper Paige Sims as an early Greyhound goal was the difference in a 1-0 defeat, Thursday night from Holloway Field.
The Details
Loyola started things off with a shot in the fifth minute. A minute later, Bella Killgore's free kick was on net, but Sims made the save. Mikala Furuto had the first scoring chance of the game in the ninth minute, but her shot from the top of the box was wide left. Rice was called for a foul in the 11th minute, and Loyola took advantage. Baylee DeSmit's free kick went off the crossbar, but it bounced off the back of Killgore and went into the net for the game's first goal. The Owls then started to apply pressure. In the 39th minute, Furuto's shot sailed toward the top of the net, but Sims made the leaping save, knocking the ball over the crossbar. Rice then got two straight shots by Jessica Molina and Catarina Albuquerque, the second one saved by Sims as the Owls went into halftime trailing, 1-0.
Rice spent the majority of the second half in the offensive zone. After Grace Collins sent one on net, Killgore's free kick was punched over the net by a leaping Sims. Two minutes later, Bailey Peek's shot sailed just over the crossbar. In the 78th minute, Loyola was called for a yellow card just outside the box. Killgore's shot was blocked, but it went straight to Albuquerque. However, Sims was there to make the save. The Owls kept the pressure on, getting four more shots off, but couldn't get it over the goal line before time ran out.
