HOUSTON, Texas — Layton Glisson's goal in the 87th minute snapped a scoreless tie and Rice fell in its home opener, 1-0, Sunday afternoon from Holloway Field.
The Details
The match was delayed due to lightning in the area. It started off slow before Mikala Furuto got the first shot off in the 13th minute, but Samford goalkeeper Morgan McAsland made the save. The Bulldogs got their first shot a minute later and followed with another in the 19th minute off a free kick, but Bella Killgore was there for the save. The match was even for most of the first half as neither team could get a good chance, and they closed the half scoreless. Just a minute into the second half, Shiloh Miller headed one on net off Killgore's free kick. After two Samford shots, the Owls began to put pressure on the Bulldogs. Grace Collins got just inside the box, but her shot was deflected high. The Owls had their best chance four minutes later when Collins found Madison Kent streaking down the right side. Kent's shot was able to get past the McAslan, but it hit the left post and McAslan corralled it before it could cross the goal line. Play went back-and-forth over the next 20 minutes. In the 80th minute, Jules Johnston dribbled down the left side, slipping past her defender to get a shot off, but it went wide right. But in the 86th minute, Samford's Taylor Yount got past Bailey Peek and sent the ball ahead. Killgore came up to get it, but Layton Glisson reached it first, popping the ball over Killgore's head before it bounced into the Rice net for the first goal of the game. Rice had one last chance when, off Collins' corner kick, Killgore fired a shot straight on. But McAsland made the save, ending the Rice threat and sealing the victory.
