Rice women's tennis coach Elizabeth Schmidt announced on Tuesday a pair of additions to the team for the 2022-23 season.
Freshman Marte Lambrecht will join the Owls at the start of the fall semester, while Sydney Berlin will join the team in January for the dual season after competing for the Florida Gators for four seasons.
"We are excited to welcome Marte and Sydney to the Owl family and looking forward to having them on campus soon," Schmidt said. "Through getting to know them in the recruiting process we saw they both will be great fits with the culture of our program."
Lambrecht, who is from Vlimmeren, Belgium, was 15-0 on hard court ITF events in 2021 and won three junior tournaments while reaching a high of #163 in the ITF World Junior rankings in January.
"Not only does Marte have a very solid tennis resume where she has continued to improve each year but she also is an exceptional student. She is ambitious, hard-working and very driven both on the court and in the classroom," Schmidt noted.
Although she was born in Buffalo, New York, Berlin moved to Sweden at age nine. She was ranked third in Sweden in the18 & under division before enrolling at Florida in January of 2019 where she eventually moved into the sixth singles line for the ninth-ranked Gators. She posted a career mark of 52- 33 in singles (31-18 in dual competition) and was 17-27 in doubles. She was 3-1 in NCAA doubles play as the Gators advanced to the round of 32 in each season and added a 1-1 mark in doubles.
"Sydney is a very mature and experienced player as well as just a great person. She will have a positive impact on our team both on and off the court," Schmidt stated.
