HOUSTON, Texas — Hershey (Pa.) High School announced Wednesday morning that Rice head basketball coach Scott Pera will be inducted into its Hall of Fame.
Pera, a 1985 graduate, will be inducted with four others on October 14.
He was a two-time letterwinner in both basketball and baseball. He was the starting point guard on back-to-back conference champions. Pera still holds the school single-season and career assist records while also earning All-Conference honors as a second baseman on the baseball team.
Pera began his career at Annville-Cleona (Pa.) High School, where he coached from 1995-2000. In 1999, he led the squad to the Pennsylvania state title with a 30-3 mark, earning Pennsylvania Coach of the Year honors by both the Lancaster/Lebanon League and the Lebanon Daily News. He then moved to Southern California where he led Artesia High School from 2000-06, including the 2006 state title with a 33-1 record. He was named the Los Angeles Times and Long Beach Press Telegram Southern California Coach of the Year in 2003 and `06, and the CIF Division III AA and SCIBCA Division III AA Coach of the Year the same seasons. He led his prep teams to seven league championships, two CIF Southern Section Division III championships, and three 30-win seasons. In 11 seasons as a high school coach, he posted a 258-65 record.
Pera began his collegiate career at Arizona State, starting as Director of Operations in 2006-07 before serving as an assistant coach from 2008-12. While at ASU, helped the Sun Devils to three 20-win campaigns, two NIT appearances, and a berth in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
"Being inducted into the HHS Hall of Fame is one of the great honors of my lifetime," said Pera. "I took tremendous pride in competing for Hershey High School in both basketball and baseball. I was fortunate to play on some very good teams with great teammates and now lifelong friends. There was no one that cared more about winning and representing the school and township than I did. I would like to thank the committee and school board for voting me into this distinguished group of men and women. I am looking forward to coming home for the induction ceremony and sharing this honor with my friends, teammates, coaches, and family."
He enters his sixth season as head coach at Rice. Last year, he led the Owls to a berth in the College Basketball Invitational, its first postseason berth since 2016. He has led the team to three straight seasons with at least 15 wins for the first time since 2002-06.
