Westside HS graduate transfers from Cal to return home
HOUSTON – Rice women's basketball head coach Lindsay Edmonds announced on Thursday (May 12) the addition of former 6-foot-4 University of Cal center Fatou Samb as a transfer. Samb will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Owls.
"We are thrilled to welcome Fatou Samb to our team and our Rice family," Edmonds said. "To add someone of her caliber and her size with Pac-12 experience to our roster is so exciting and immediately elevates our program. Not only did we get a great player, but Fatou is a tremendous young lady and her energy is amazing. We are so happy that she is coming home and is making an already bright future even brighter!"
Samb, a Houston native and graduate of Westside High School, played in 38 games across two seasons for Cal averaging 2.3 points and 2.2 rebounds while averaging 12 minutes per contest. She played in 21 games this past season and made eight starts as a true freshman and scored in double-figures three times.
Samb will return home to a city where she was named a two-time District 6A Defensive Player of the Year under head coach Troy Gillespie and was ranked the No. 53 overall prospect by ESPN's HoopGurlz and the No. 6 overall post in the class of 2020.
For her prep career, Samb averaged 7.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks while twice earning first team all-district accolades. Samb played her club ball for Cy-Fair Premier National under head coach Chris Johnson and earned a spot on the USA Basketball 16U Team Trials Camp.
