BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Rice Owls women's track and field team captured three individual titles on the second day of the Texas A&M 44 Farms Team Invitational on Saturday while also welcoming back the return of an All-American.
Sophomore thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan (hammer throw) and junior thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir (shot put) each picked up victories in the field as they continued their dominance in their respective events. Simpson-Sullivan, who was named last week's Conference USA Female Field Athlete of the Week, won her second straight hammer throw competition, besting last week's performance with a distance of 66.95m (219-8.00) for a new meet record and the ninth-best mark in the NCAA this season. Gunnarsdottir won her first shot put event of the outdoor season with a distance of 16.70m (54-9.50).
Junior distance runner Alyssa Balandran earned her third 800m victory of the year by setting a personal best time of 2:09.03, a mark that broke the meet record and ranks third in C-USA. Meanwhile, sophomore All-American Grace Forbes made her 2022 debut with a second place result in the 1500m, crossing the finish line in 4:23.30 for the top mark in C-USA.
The Owls will next gear up for the SFA Earl Milner Invitational, which will take place April 15 in Nacogdoches.
