Texarkana, Ark. — The Rice golf team had its best round of the year, firing a four-under par 284 to sit in second-place after one round of the Conference USA Championship.
The Owls are three strokes behind current leader Florida Atlantic, who is seven-under par. The 284 is Rice's third lowest round in C-USA Championship history and its lowest first round score. It is also its second-best round to par in championship history.
Freshman Raghav Chugh began the tournament with an opening 69 to sit in a tie for third-place, two strokes behind leader Tyler Jones of Marshall. Starting the day on the back nine, Chugh birdied the 12th hole. After giving it back on the 14th, he bounced back with three straight birdies to make the turn at three-under. He then bogeyed the second hole, and after parring the next four, birdied the seventh before closing the round with two straight pars.
It is Chugh's team-leading 15th round of par or better this year, becoming the seventh player since 1991 with at least 15 rounds of par or better in a season. It is also his fifth round in the 60's, tying the fourth-most since 1991.
Seniors Harrison Hineline and Jack Diamond are tied for 12th-place after firing a one-under par 71. It is HIneline's eighth round of par or better this year and the 20th of his career. Diamond now has three rounds of par or better this year and six in his career.
Senior Jake Benson carded a one-over 73 to sit in a 25th-place tie and junior Thomas Bockholt III is tied for 31st-place after posting a two-over par 74.
HEAD COACH JUSTIN EMIL QUOTABLE
"The guys played well today. We kept the golf ball in front of us most of the round and took advantage of the par fives. It was a good start to the week."
