Owls Race Past Islanders
3/6/2022 6:24:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Host Charlotte on Friday
In Brief: Rice reset the bar after a sluggish round of doubles and roared back to down Texas A&M Corpus Christi 4-1 at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday.
Doubles: The Islanders gained the early advantage by racing to wins at the first and third lines. Wes Barnett and Trinity Grear posted the Owls lone win in the early going, taking a 6-1 decision at the second line.
Singles: In much the same fashion as they did against Abilene Christian, the Owl put the doubles effort behind them and swiftly went up a break on multiple courts in the early singles action. Haoyuan Huang and Emir Sendogan raced to quick wins at the first two lines to put the Owls in front, while each of their teammates took first sets. Doubles partners Barnett and Grear then followed with the final two points to clinch the win.
Efe Ustundag: "It was kind of a repeat of the ACU match in that our doubles effort lacked any energy. We didn't show up for the first 30 minutes of the match. But every one of them went out and got an early break in singles and that set the tone for the rest of the day. I loved the response to our start, but they know that today was not good enough in doubles. It was good to get the win and good to see our determination to come back, but they know we have to bring that same approach to the start of the match."

Notable:
- Rice is 6-1 when clinching the doubles point and 2-5 when dropping it. The win over ACU on 2/13 after dropping the doubles point broke a 23-match streak where the Owls could not overcome the loss in doubles.
- Clinch Points: Campbell Salmon (3), Haoyuan Huang & Trinity Grear (2), Eduardo Morais (1).
