Owls Close Strong on Final Day of Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's track and field team put the finishing touches on the 39th annual Victor Lopez Classic on Saturday at Wendel D. Ley Track & Holloway Field, winning five total events.
Rice won three of their five events in the field, including a pair in the jumps. Junior KC Nwadei claimed the second-best mark (1.74m) in Conference USA in the high jump while sophomore Ginnie Okafor won the triple jump with a distance of 12.28m. Sophomore Elena Siemens was victorious in the pole vault, clearing 3.61m.
Alyssa Balandran continued her strong start to the outdoor campaign by winning the 800m in a time of 2:11.19, followed closely by teammate Taigen Hunter-Galvan (2:12.82). The Owls closed out the evening by winning the 4x100 relay with a time of 47.34.
Meanwhile in Austin, junior thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir set a personal best mark of 17.29m (56-8.75) in the shot put to place second overall at the Texas Relays. That mark ranked fourth in the NCAA as of Saturday.
