
Owls Stand 5th After First Day of CSCAA National Invitational

Owls send five to finals
In Brief: Arielle Hayon tied for third in the 50 butterfly to lead Rice's efforts on the first day of the CSCAA National Invitational in Elkhart, Indiana. The Owls stand in fifth place after eight events.
The Details: Hayon led five Owls who qualified for championship finals on Thursday. She tied for third in the 50 fly in 23.97 while Madison Howe was seventh in 24.24. Marta Cano-Minarro (2:01.18) and Imogen Meers (2:01.57) finished sixth and seventh in the 200 IM and Amelia Kane was 10th in the freestyle (4:58.17) in the Owls other efforts in event finals. Becca Evans scored in a pair of individual consolation finals, placing 12th in the 50 fly (24.69) and 16th in the 50 free (23.32). Shannon Campbell (12th in 4:52.07) and Sydney Morgan (20th in 5:04.58) picked up points in the 500 free consolation and Zoe Spitz picked up points with a 13th place finish in the 50 backstroke. Rice also picked up points in both relays. Howe, Meers, Cano-Minarro and Evans finished sixth in the 200 free relay (1:31.38) while Spitz, Megan Schultze, Hayon, and Lauren McDougall finished eighth in the 400 medley relay (3:42.09).
The Standings: Conference USA champion FIU leads after the first day with 265 points. Ohio State (256), Tennessee (242), Akron (236.5) and Rice (177) round out the top five.

Up Next: Day two of the competition features six events (400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and the 800 free relay. Prelims begin at 8:30 and the finals begin at 5 p.m.
