Weekend in Tempe
In Brief: The Rice men's tennis team heads west this weekend for three days of dual matches as part of an eight-team event hosted by Arizona State. The Owls, who were ranked 64th in the first ITA computer poll, are the second seed in the event. No. 34 Memphis is the event's top seed while Cal-Poly and UCSB round out the four seeds.
The Format: Rice will face host Arizona State on Friday at 3 p.m. in the opening round. The winner will face the winner of the match between UCSB and Utah State while the losers of both matches will face off each other on Saturday. Sunday's final matches will follow the bracket format.
The Owls: Rice is 6-4 after splitting a pair of matches in New Orleans. They dropped a 6-1 decision to Tulane on Saturday but bounced back to defeat the University of New Orleans 6-1 on Sunday.
Arizona State: The Sun Devils are 1-6 this season with four of their losses against teams in the coaches' poll top 25. They dropped a 6-1 decision at home to Texas, which defeated Rice 7-0 in Austin. This will be the third meeting between the schools in men's tennis and the first since ASU took a 6-1 win in 2002.
Notable:
- Rice is 5-0 when clinching the doubles point and 1-4 when dropping it. The win over ACU on 2/13 after dropping the doubles point broke a 23-match streak where the Owls could not overcome the loss in doubles.
- Clinch Points: Campbell Salmon (3), Trinity Grear, Haoyuan Huang & Eduardo Morais (1).
