HOUSTON — Rice was held to just 31.9% from the field it fell to Conference USA West Division leader North Texas, 67-44, Saturday afternoon from Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Story
The game started slowly as Rice led just 6-4 at the first media timeout. After a jumper by Tyler Perry, Max Fiedler gave the Owls the lead with a layup. But the Mean Green went on a 7-0 run over the next three minutes. After Mylyjael Poteat made a pair of free throws, the teams traded baskets. With North Texas holding a 19-14 lead with 8:14 to play in the half, Rice made just one of its final 10 shots as UNT closed the half on a 15-4 run to take a 34-18 lead into halftime.
The teams traded three-pointers to open the second half, including the Owls' first of the game from Travis Evee. After Thomas Bell made one-of-two free throws, Poteat hit a layup. North Texas then went on a 13-5 run before Riley Abercrombie drained a three-pointer. Five straight points pushed UNT's lead to 25, but a Poteat jumper followed by a Chris Mullins three-point play brought the Owls within 56-36, their closest margin the rest of the way.
The Stats
Rice was held to 31.9% (15-of-47) from the field and 23.1% from three (3-of-13). North Texas shot 43.1% (25-of-58) from the floor and 36.8% (7-of-19) from three. Rice was also outrebounded by the Mean Green, 40-to-29.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"All the credit goes to North Texas. They just dominated us after the first four minutes of the game. When they build a lead like that, it's almost insurmountable because of how they play. Being down 16 (points) at the half was too many. You can't go 16 empty possessions against them and have any chance. So, again, all the credit goes to them."
Notes
• Rice dropped to 14-10 on the season and 6-6 in Conference USA.
• Rice connected on 91.7% from the free throw line, the third time this year it made at least 90.0%.
• Sophomore Travis Evee scored 12 points and had three rebounds.
• Second-year sophomore Mylyjael Poteat scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Next Up
Rice heads on the road for a two-game trip, beginning next Thursday, Feb. 17 when it travels to Birmingham, Ala., to face UAB. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and it will be televised by Stadium.
