HOUSTON — For the second time in three weeks, Rice men's basketball guard Quincy Olivari was named the Conference USA Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
It is his second honor of the year and the third of his career. He is the first Owl to win the award twice in a season since Marcus Evans in 2016-17 and just the third with three career honors, joining Morris Almond and Arsalan Kazemi.
Olivari led Rice to a 2-1 record, averaging 26.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals. He opened the week scoring a game-high 28 points, including two free throws that sent the game into overtime, at No. 7 Texas. He also added five rebounds and four assists. Olivari then scored a game-high 22 points with four assists, three rebounds and two steals in a 92-54 victory over North American. Olivari was also four-of-six from three as he became the 39th player in school history to score 1,000 career points.
The Atlanta, Ga., native closed the week with his best performance, tying a season-high with 30 points, his second 30-point game this year, in a 110-73 victory over Northwestern State, snapping the Demons' seven-game winning streak. He was 9-of-14 (64.3%) from the field and 11-of-13 (84.6%) from the free throw line as Rice put up 110 points for just the fifth time in school history. He also added six rebounds and two assists.
On the week, Olivari connected on 53.2% (25-of-47) from the floor, 50.0% (9-of-18) from three and 87.5% (21-of-24) from the free throw line. With nine three-pointers on the week, he moved into third-place on Rice's all-time list with 187 while helping the Owls to win seven of their last eight games. He also became the first Owl with five straight 20-point games in a season since Marcus Evans in 2015-16.
Rice closes its non-conference schedule tonight when it hosts Jarvis Christian. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and will streamed by CUSAtv.
