Schuman honored for third consecutive year, Baker recognized for the second time
Shea Baker, Isaac Klarkowski, Luke McCaffrey, and Trey Schuman have been named to CSC's 2022 Academic All-District® Football Team for their combined excellence on the field and in the classroom. All four will be placed on the ballot to determine the 2022 CSC Academic All-America® to be announced in mid-December.
Schuman was named to the team for the third consecutive year, the fourth Rice football player to be honored in three consecutive years, and the first since Tanner Leland in 2014. Baker was also honored in 2020. This is the first CSC Academic All-District® honor for Klarkowski and McCaffrey.
Schuman is a two-time team captain for the Owls and was a three-year starter coming into the 2022 season. Despite battling injuries that kept him out of a starting role, he played in all 12 games in the regular season and posted a career-high four sacks. He is tied for the team lead with six quarterback hits and second on the team with 22 total pressures on 132 pass rushes. After graduating with a degree in Economics and Managerial Studies and posting a 3.78 GPA, he has maintained a 3.91 GPA the past two seasons while pursuing his MBA from the Jones School at Rice.
Baker has anchored the Owls' offensive line since taking the field for the first time in 2018 and joined Schuman as a captain this season. He surpassed 3,600 snaps last Saturday against North Texas and has played in 54 consecutive games while starting 53 at either center or guard. He earned his undergraduate degree in Sport Management-Leadership with a minor in Business (3.54 GPA) and carries a 3.51 GPA in the Rice MBA program.
Klarkowski became a starter as a true freshman walk-on in 2019 and has made 14 career starts at center despite missing most of 2021 with an injury. He has a 3.79 GPA in Mechanical Engineering.
McCaffrey made the successful switch from quarterback to wide receiver this year, leading the Owls with 51 receptions and ranking second with 656 yards receiving and six touchdown receptions despite missing the final two games of the regular season. He caught 10 passes for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns at Louisiana Tech, matching the sixth-best total for receiving yards in school history. He carries a 3.54 GPA while majoring in Sport Management-Leadership.
