HOUSTON — Rice men's basketball guard Mekhi Mason was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
It is Rice's first Freshman of the Week honor since Chris Mullins in 2018.
Mason had his best game of his early career in a 76-67 victory over Houston Christian. He led all players with 25 points, his first career 20-point game, while adding three assists. He was 10-of-14 from the field, 4-of-7 from three and hit his only free throw. With the Owls trailing with six minutes left, he scored seven straight points to give them the lead for good. His performance helped Rice rally from a 17-point, halftime deficit and a three-game sweep of the Owl Invitational. His 25 points are the most by a Rice freshman since former C-USA Freshman of the Year Marcus Evans in 2016.
Rice closes its four-game homestand this Wednesday, Nov. 30, when it hosts Prairie View A&M. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed by CUSAtv.
