Spitz Leads Owls on First Day of Fall Splash

Clocks second-fastest 200 backstroke in school history

In Brief: Zoe Spitz swam the second-fastest 200 backstroke in school history and Rice won four of six individual events in addition to both relays to take the lead after the first day of the Fall Splash at the Rice Competition Pool on Friday. Rice totaled 192 points to lead Houston (151) and Incarnate Word (63).
The Details: After opening with a win in the 400 medley relay, Rice swept the top three spots in the 500 freestyle and 200 backstroke. Freshman Ella Dyson won her collegiate debut in 4:56.56 in the 500 followed by Amelia Kane (4:58.95) and Shannon Campbell (5:03.11). Spitz then blitzed the field in the 200 back, hitting the wall in 1:56.76, dropping her own personal best by nearly a second and coming just .15 from matching Ellery Parish's 2019 school record of 1:56.61. She was followed by freshmen Katherine Sammy (2:07.34) and Abigail King (2:08.60). Arielle Hayon won the 200 fly 2:02.58 and another freshman, Lily Cramer, captured the 100 breast in 1:03.35.
