Host North Texas on January 22
Final Results
In Brief: Marta Cano-Minarro rallied for a win in the 200 freestyle and Sydney Morgan placed second in a pair of events to highlight the return to competition for the Rice swimming team on Friday at the University of Houston's Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium on Friday. Rice faced off against SMU and Houston, with the Mustangs winning 164-98 and Houston taking a 181-104.
In Brief: Cano-Minarro trailed SMU's Jenna Watson by nearly a second heading into the last 50 but ran her down in the final 25 yards to pick up her third win in the 200 free this season. Shannon Campbell was third in the same event. Morgan placed second in the 500 free and 200 IM and added a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM. Arielle Hayon finished second in the 100 and third in the 200 fly events. Swimming in the first heat, Ginny Qian earned a third-place finish in the 1000 free. Amelia Kane placed third in the 200 back.
Seth Huston: "We needed to get up and race today. It's been a month since we competed. We did it with a pretty lean, mean team, swimming 18 of our 31. I was happy with what I saw. We looked tired but we swam some strategically smart races and we had some people get up and really race. I was really happy with Marta Cano-Minaro. She came from behind to win the 200 free and she had a great 100 fly for her. Arielle Hayon came up with a solid 200 fly and a really good 100 fly for where we are at in the season. Sydney Morgan was fantastic throughout. I was really watching how we would compete at the end of the meet and I thought we did a pretty good job even though I think the gas tank was pretty empty for a couple of people. So now we move forward. We won't compete again for two weeks and I bet we're a whole lot better in two weeks. Everyone here has been dealing with COVID but to mush on and still be able to compete today (when a number of dual meets around the country are being postponed) and stay the course was really important. Everyone who was able to race proved that they were ready to go mentally even if they weren't quite there physically."
Up Next: The Owls will return to competition on January 22 when they host C-USA rival North Texas at 11 a.m. at the Rice Competition Pool.
