HUNTINGTON, W.V. — Carl Pierre scored a career-high 30 points and tied the school record with eight three-pointers to lead Rice to an 87-77 victory over Marshall, Saturday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Story
The Owls started the game strong. After Marshall led 4-3, Pierre hit two straight three-pointers to send Rice on an 8-0 run. The teams traded baskets over the next six minutes before a pair of Travis Evee layups gave Rice a 22-13 lead midway through the first half. Two minutes later, Max Fiedler gave the Owls an 11-point lead with consecutive buckets. Marshall scored eight of the next 10 points to pull within seven points, but a Pierre three-pointer with 3:17 to play sent the Owls on an 8-2 run to close the half and take a 44-31 lead into halftime.
The teams went back-and-forth through the first six minutes of the second half. With the Owls holding a 52-40 lead, the Thundering Herd went on a 10-0 run to pull with two points. Pierre made a three to push the lead to five. After a Taevion Kinsey layup, Pierre made two free throws. Andrew Taylor made a jumper but Mylyjael Poteat made one of two free throws. Marshall then scored twice to tie the game at 58 with 8:35 to play.
But the Owls answered as Pierre hit two threes in an 11-2 run. The Herd scored six straight to make it a three-point game. Pierre made a layup and Poteat made one of two from the line. Marshall cut it to 72-68 with 3:40 to play. But Evee scored five points in an 8-0 run to give Rice an 80-68 lead with just over a minute to play, sealing the victory.
The Stats
Rice connected on 53.6% from the field, 60.0% from three, and 75.0% from the free throw line. Marshall connected on 46.1% from the floor but just 19.4% from three. Rice was outrebounded, 41-to-35.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"We really challenged the team on withstanding runs. We're not a young team anymore, we're an older team. To win on the road, you're going to have to withstand runs. We knew Marshall was going to make a run. We weren't perfect. It's not always going to be perfect. But every time they made a run, we responded. I thought we handled the pressure really well at the end. We didn't turn the ball over. We made enough free throws to keep the separation. It was just an overall great team win."
