- • Rice's last win over Texas came in 1994 at Rice Stadium (19-17) in a game moved to a Sunday night broadcast on ESPN to fill a slot vacated by the cancelled MLB season due to the player's strike.
- • The two schools faced off 83 times as members of the Southwest Conference and have met 13 times in a non-conference setting with Texas winning all 13.
- • Rice's 13 games vs. Texas are the most for Owls vs. any Big XII school. Rice is 2-25 all-time vs. the conference. The Owls dropped their first 20 games vs. Big XII teams before defeating Kansas in 2012.
- • In addition to Texas, Rice has faced Baylor (0-6), Kansas (2-0), Kansas State (0-1), Nebraska (0-1), Oklahoma (0-1), Oklahoma State (0-1) and Texas Tech (0-2) as members of the Big XII.
While Saturday's game is the first time Mike Bloomgren and Steve Sarkisian have faced off as head coaches, they have met five previous times while both were in the Pac 12. As offensive coordinator at Stanford, Bloomgren won two of three meetings when Sarkisian was head coach at Washington and split two meetings while he was at USC.
Holding the Line Rice has stopped opponents on their last eight fourth down conversion attempts dating back to the final game of the 2019 season. The Owls denied UTEP's final offensive attempt in 2019, held the opposition to an 0/6 mark in 2020 and stopped Arkansas on its only fourth down attempt in the opener.
Fast Starter Antonio Montero has topped 10 tackles in each of the first two games, matching his career high with 11 at Arkansas and adding 10 vs. Houston. He is the first Owl to open the year with consecutive double-digit tackle games since Brian Raines opened the 2006 season with 17 vs. Houston and added 12 at UCLA. Raines also face Texas in his third game and was credited with seven stops.
