Advances to third NCAA Championships this Spring
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Rice outdoor freshman distance runner Grace Forbes qualified for her third NCAA Championship appearance this spring semester in grand style by using one final kick on lap 25 to win the 10,000m late Thursday evening at the NCAA West Prelims from E.B. Cushing Stadium.
Forbes, who earned All-American honors at both the NCAA Indoor Championships and NCAA Cross Country Championships this spring, used one final burst on the final lap to surpass Oregon's Carmela Cardama Baez to win by almost two seconds with a time of 33:28.47. The reigning Conference USA Performer of the Meet, Forbes has now won all six races she's competed in this outdoor season.
Forbes will now have an opportunity, along with NC State's Kelsey Chmiel, to earn All-American honors in the NCAA Outdoor 10k, the NCAA Indoor 5000m, and the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Freshman thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan is in prime position to advance with Forbes to the grand stage after her mark of 64.87m (212-10) in the hammer throw and currently sits comfortably in sixth place. Simpson-Sullivan needed a solid throw on her final attempt to climb into the Top-12 and did just that with the clutch result. The event was protested due to an issue with the measuring laser and thus the entire first flight will take place again on Friday.
Sophomore thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir was barely edged out from advancing to Eugene in the shot put, placing 13th overall with a mark of 16.57m (54-4.50). Gunnarsdottir, who was seeded 17th, fouled on her first attempt and threw 16.07m (52-8.75) on her second attempt. Sitting in 14th place prior to her final throw, Gunnarsdottir saved her best for last with the heave of 16.57m and moved into 12th place temporarily. However, Texas' Elena Bruckner threw 17.36m on the final throw of the entire competition to push Gunnarsdottir to 13th place.
Senior jumper Michelle Fokam fouled on all three attempts in the long jump but will have another opportunity in the triple jump on Saturday at 3:15 p.m., along with teammate Maryam Hassan. Also competing on Saturday will be sophomore thrower Julie Perez in the discus (1:30 p.m.)
