Forbes earns High Point Scorer of Meet, Freshman of the Year
MURFREESBORO, TN - Rice freshman distance runner Grace Forbes recorded two more victories while senior jumper Michelle Fokam earned her 10th career conference title in memorable fashion to highlight the Owls final day of competition Sunday at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
The Owls placed second overall as a team with 121.5 points, their most since the 2009 C-USA Outdoor Championships. Host Middle Tennessee took home first place honors with 150 team points.
Rice posted seven individual title winners, tying the 2004 team for the most in program history at an outdoor conference championship. In total, the Owls registered 13 all-conference performances.
Forbes completed the trifecta on Sunday by winning both the 1500m (4:14.42-C-USA Championship record) and her first-ever 5000m race (16:19.82) to go along with her record-breaking victory in the 10,000m on Friday. Forbes earned the C-USA Female High Point Scorer of the Meet with the 30 points and was also named the C-USA Freshman of the Meet. Forbes has now won a combined eight individual C-USA titles between the outdoor, indoor, and cross country seasons.
Fokam broke the school record in the triple jump on her final attempt, leaping 13.60m (44-7.50) to surpass Claudia Haywood's 1993 mark of 13.57m. That mark ranks fourth in the NCAA West region and is ninth overall in the NCAA. Fokam ended her conference career by winning the triple jump at three consecutive C-USA Outdoor Championships.
