Owls win four events at final home meet
HOUSTON – The No. 29 ranked Rice Owls women's track & field team bookended Saturday at the 17th annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight by setting school records at the Wendel D. Ley Track and Holloway Field.
Freshman thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan, the reigning C-USA Field Athlete of the Week, broke the school record in the hammer throw for a fifth time this season, the last four of which have been her own mark. Simpson-Sullivan recorded a throw of 68.91m (226-01) on her fifth attempt, a mark which ranks No. 3 currently in the NCAA.
Towards the back end of the evening, freshman distance runner Grace Forbes made her home debut one to remember. Forbes, who already holds the No. 1 time in the 10,000m this season, blew away the competition yet again en route to a school record-breaking time of 4:14.16 in her first-ever 1500m race. Forbes surpassed Lennie Waite's previous record (4:16.09- 2009) as well as the stadium record, formerly held by Mary Knisely (1985) and moved into 10th in the NCAA this season.
Senior jumper Michelle Fokam put together a tremendous performance in a pair of events on Saturday, winning both the long jump and triple jump. Fokam set a PR of 6.75m (22-01.75) in the long jump, which would have counted as a school record if not for being wind assisted. Nonetheless, the mark ranks fifth in the NCAA this season. The Katy, Texas native followed up that performance with a victory in the triple jump at 13.45m.
Also recording a win for the Owls was thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir, who threw 16.14m (52-11.5) in the shot put for her third victory of the season.
Other standout performances by the Owls included Julie Perez in the discus (2nd-53.01m) and Ali Goodson in the pole vault (3.77m-PB). Justice Coutee-McCullum also notched a top-three performance with a time of 13.90 in the 100m hurdles while Natalie Goddard set a PR in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:09.42, ranked third in C-USA.
