Freshman breaks own hammer throw school record
SAN ANTONIO - Rice freshman thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan continued her storybook outdoor season by yet again breaking her own school record in the hammer throw with a winning mark of 67.67m (222-00) Friday afternoon at the Roadrunner Invitational.
Simpson-Sullivan, from Penrith, England, bested her previous school record of 65.53m set just two weeks ago with the NCAA's No. 4 ranked throw on Saturday. The personal best performance also ranks as the top mark in the hammer throw by a freshman in the nation this season.
Simpson-Sullivan originally broke Dreu Dixson's hammer throw school record (56.92m-2017) in the season opener at the Longhorn Invitational back on Mar. 6. Since that date, Simpson-Sullivan has re-established her own new school record on three occasions. The victory is Simpson-Sullivan's sixth of the outdoor season.
The No. 32 ranked Rice women now have four athletes who rank in the Top-20 in the NCAA in various events this outdoor season; Grace Forbes (1st-10,000m-32:24.38), Simpson-Sullivan (4th-HT-67.67m), Michelle Fokam (6th-TJ-13.52m), and Gunnarsdottir (19th-SP-16.72m).

The native of Iceland recorded a throw of 16.67m (54-08.25) to win her sixth career outdoor shot put event. Also notching a top-three performance was Julie Perez in the hammer throw, placing second behind Simpson-Sullivan in the hammer throw with a mark of 54.51m (178-10).
