HOUSTON, Texas — Rice head basketball coach Scott Pera announced the promotion of Greg Howell to Assistant Coach Thursday morning.
"I am pleased to announce the promotion of Greg Howell to Assistant Coach today," said Pera. "Greg was asked to handle a tremendous amount during his first year as Video Coordinator this past season. Thanks to the NCAA one-time rule change, he could be on the court with our team. He did an excellent job in helping our post players improve, culminating in a record setting season for Max Fiedler. I have known Greg for over eighteen years going back to his playing days at Artesia High School where he, along with Derek Glasser, helped win a State Championship in 2006. Greg brings a wealth of knowledge, passion and loyalty to our staff. He is well respected and liked by our players and will be a tremendous recruiter as well. I couldn't be happier for him and more excited for our program to see Greg in his new role."
Howell spent last year as the Video Coordinator, where he prepared all post-practice video for the coaches and team. Additionally, he prepared video on all upcoming opponents. He also worked on the floor during practice, working with the post players. His work helped Max Fiedler become one of the best big men in Conference USA, as he finished in the top ten in C-USA in rebounding, assists, assist-to-turnover ratio and double-doubles while setting a Rice record for single-season field goal percentage.
Howell came to South Main after spending four years as Director and Head Coach of the Team Harden AAU basketball program, where he handled all administrative responsibilities while developing and implementing training programs for all teams.
Prior to Team Harden, Howell served as a Marketing Associate and Scouting Assistant for the Houston Rockets. While with the Rockets, he assisted with online scouting future potential prospects while creating detailed reports on player's on-court performance.
"I am proud and excited to be named the new men's basketball assistant coach at Rice University," said Howell. "I would like to thank Coach Pera and Rice for giving me the opportunity. I'm blessed and thrilled to work alongside a great staff and a group of young student-athletes. I look forward to the continued success and growth of the Rice Men's Basketball program. Go Owls!"
Howell earned his degree from Waldorf College in 2012, where he starred from 2010-12, recording 81 career steals, the sixth most in school history.
