Owls down Prairie View 7-0
In Brief: The 35th ranked Rice women's tennis celebrated Senior Day for a pair of graduating classes on Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Courts and wrapped up the 2021 home dual schedule with a 7-0 win over Prairie View A&M.
Doubles: After ceremonies saluting current Owl seniors Michaela Haet and Linda Huang and 2020 senior Priya Niezgoda (whose Senior Day was cancelled when the 2020 season was cancelled by the pandemic), the Owls moved swiftly to capture the doubles point, dropping only four games across three lines.
Singles: The Owls maintained the momentum from doubles, capturing all six first singles sets while dropping only three games and then closing out all six courts in straight sets. Haet and Huang won their final home singles matches while Maria Budin picked up her first clinch point of the dual season.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "It was nice to get right back on the court after the tough battle yesterday (with SMU). It was a special day for Linda and Micki with it being their last match at George R. Brown. I was glad we were able to celebrate their careers and it was great to be able to have Priya back because her season was cut short last year. She meant a lot to our program, so it was nice to honor her as well. It was our last home match, but we have a lot of tennis to play. Houston (road match next Saturday) is having a great season and I am excited to get out there and battle with them at their place and then we roll into conference the following week. The conference is getting stronger every year and we'll have to be ready to go from the first match on. But right now, all the focus is on getting ready for Houston."
Up Next: Rice will make the short trip to face Houston at 11 a.m. next Saturday.
