Mustangs Answer Owls Charge
4/10/2021 3:50:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Senior Day set for Sunday at 11 a.m.
In Brief: The 35th ranked Rice women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to #48 SMU at the George R. Brown Tennis Courts on Saturday.
Doubles: SMU surged to an early 4-0 lead at the third line while Rice held an early break and the second and the two teams were on serve at one. While the Owls fought back to close to 4-5 on three and hold off an early advantage for the Mustangs, Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi broke at 3-3 and never looked back for a 6-3 win over SMU's 46th ranked duo of Hadley Doyle and Jackie Nylander. SMU rallied to take the match on the second line and then closed out the point with a 6-4 win at three. The win by Budin and El Jardi was their third this spring over a ranked doubles foe.
Singles: The teams split the opening sets of singles evenly leaving the Owls in need of at least one three-set win to capture the match. After SMU extended the lead to 2-0, Anastasia Smirnova maintained her first set pace in the second to take a straight set win at the fourth line. Federica Trevisan, who had dropped her first set 6-0 and fallen behind 3-0 in the second, provided the Owls a three-set win to even the score at 2-2. But SMU closed out the match with a straight set win and six and then a three-set win at five to clinch the match and win for the 22nd time in the 40 matches between the schools.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "Credit SMU for playing a really solid match from start to finish. They were more aggressive than us in doubles. We had our chances, but in the end they stepped up when they needed to. It was a tough college tennis match with battles up and down the courts. It came down to a few key points and they were able to take them. We'll learn from this and be better the next time."
Up Next: The Owls will close out the 2021 home schedule tomorrow when they celebrate Senior Day by hosting Prairie View at 11 a.m.
