Rice faces Arizona State in opening round at Fort Worth Regional
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's basketball team will continue their 2020-21 journey as they will partake in the Women's National Invitational Tournament for the ninth time in program history.
The Owls, who were an automatic qualifier, will play in the Fort Worth Regional and face Arizona State on Friday, Mar. 19 at 11 a.m. from the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center. The regional runs through Mar. 22, when a champion will be crowned.
Rice (18-4, 12-2) will being playing postseason basketball for the fourth time in the last five season under head coach Tina Langley, the lone exception being last year when the postseason was canceled due to COVID-19.
The Owls advanced to the Conference USA Championship for the second time in the last three years and won the C-USA West Division title.
The WNIT is an annual invitation-only tournament involving 32 of the nation's top women's Division I basketball teams. All games will be played at pre-determined sites so that the majority of teams can bus to a site and play 2-3 games with one road trip. Each team will be guaranteed to play two games at each site. There will be an eight-team championship bracket at each location, and a four-team consolation bracket at each site.
Following the completion of each regional, the semifinal and championship games will be held in Memphis, Tennessee at the same location in suburban Collierville that is hosting one of the event's four regionals. The two semifinal games will be played March 26, with the championship game set for March 28. The semifinals are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. CT, with the championship tipping off at 1 p.m. CT.
The winners of the other three regionals (Rockford, IL; Charlotte, NC; Fort Worth) will travel directly from their locations to Collierville.
All games throughout the WNIT will be streamed by FloHoops with a subscription charge. For more information, follow the 2021 Postseason WNIT at www.womensnit.com and on Twitter @WomensNIT.
