Forbes finished sixth in the NCAA 5,000 meters
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Rice sophomore distance runner Grace Forbes continued to add accolades to her already remarkable career, becoming Rice's first First Team All-American in the 5,000 meter.
Forbes ran a time of 15:53.36 to finish in sixth-place. The finish also allowed her to become Rice's first First Team All-American since Claire Uke in the shot put in 2016.
"(Forbes) ran a gutty, gutty race for it being her first time at Nationals," Rice head coach JIm Bevan said. "She was never out of reach of the lead for basically the whole race. She was one of the youngest in the field. There were four seniors and one junior who had all been to Nationals and had been around the block. She ran a smart race and a gutty race. She left it all out there and I'm so proud of her. She had the lead with 1,200 (meters) to go. She was always involved (in the race). To do that in her first National meet shows what she is made of. I'm just so very, very proud of her."
Earlier in the day, Rice thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir earned Second Team All-American honors by placing 11th in the shot put. After throws of 15.56m and 15.85m on her first two attempts, Gunnarsdottir recorded a distance of 16.44m (53-11.25) to move up three spots in the standings.
Competing in her first NCAA Championships, Gunnarsdottir concluded an indoor season in which she won a C-USA title in the shot put with a PR of 16.95m.
