Owls Cruise to 3-0 Victory Over La Tech

Rice sweeps series from Lady Techsters
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls volleyball team wrapped up their series against the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters Monday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse with their second sweep (25-14, 25-11, 25-21) in as many days.
Rice (3-3, 2-0) showed a balanced scoring attack with five different players tallying five or more kills. Senior outside hitter Nicole Lennon led all players with 12 kills (.286) while freshman pin Sahara Maruska contributed a season-high 10 kills (.320). Sophomore Ellie Bichelmeyer (9 kills), junior middle blocker Anota Adekunle (6 kills), and freshman Danyle Courtley (5) also helped provide scoring punch for the Owls.
Junior setter Carly Graham recorded her third double-double of the season with a match-high 30 assists and 11 digs. Junior transfer Elizabeth LaBue tied for the match-high in digs with 12.
The Owls outhit LT (0-9, 0-2) by a margin of .314-.120 and outgained the Lady Techsters in digs, 52-39.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
The Owls gained the early momentum by cruising to a 25-14 victory in the opening set. Rice hit .448 as a team and Bichelmeyer and Maruska totaled four kills apiece. The Owls never trailed in the frame and held a lead as large as 23-9.
Set 2
Rice posted an 81 percent sideout clip by totaling 13 kills on 32 attacks and taking advantage of eight errors by the Lady Techsters. Bichelmeyer added an additional four kills in the set as Rice led from start to finish.
Set 3
Lennon (6 kills) and Maruska (5 kills) helped the Owls close out the set on a 15-9 run to win 25-21. The Lady Techsters held a 12-10 lead but Rice weathered the storm by hitting .312 for the game.

The Owls hit the road for the first time in Conference USA play next week when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. for a pair of matches (Feb. 14-15) at Southern Miss (5-2, 0-0). Both matches will be streamed on CUSAtv.
