Rice Volleyball Takes Down No. 15 Creighton

HOUSTON — Rice volleyball went the distance in a 3-1 win over No. 15 Creighton to close out the Rice Invitational II on Sunday at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Owls (6-3) defeated their first ranked opponent since 2023, when they swept No. 22 USC at home. Rice secured the win with set scores of 25-21, 37-35, 18-25 and 27-25. The 37-35 second set marked the first time the Owls played a set to 70 or more points since defeating Texas Tech in 2012 and playing a 74-point set.
Three Owls recorded double-doubles in the match. Sydnee Peterson secured her fourth double-double of the season with a match-high 20 kills and 11 digs. Kaia Mateo recorded her fourth with a match-high 48 assists and 11 digs, while freshman Ashlyn Seay posted her second double-double of the season with 14 kills and 13 digs.
Mari Furoyama led the Owls with 24 digs, while Campbell Love added 10. Stephanie Gutierrez recorded 10 kills, while Arissa Smith and Gutierrez each had three blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The Bluejays took an early 3-1 lead, but the Owls responded with a 7-2 run to take an 11-7 lead on a Dorotik kill. Creighton answered with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 11. The teams traded points before Rice used a 3-0 run to take a 20-17 lead and force a Creighton timeout. The Owls secured the opening set on a kill from Gutierrez.
Second Set
The second set featured 72 total points, marking the highest-scoring set at Rice since 2012. The frame featured 24 tied scores, eight lead changes and 11 set points. Rice had three set points before ultimately taking the set. The teams traded points to open the frame, with Creighton being the first to put together a 3-0 run. Rice later used a 6-1 run to take a 22-20 lead. The teams continued to trade points before a Peterson kill clinched the set for the Owls. Rice took the set 37-35 while hitting .214 with 23 kills.
Third Set
It was all Bluejays to open the third set. Rice tied the frame at 11 before Creighton pulled away. The Owls made a late push in an attempt to complete the sweep, but a 3-0 run by the Bluejays gave Creighton the 25-18 win. Rice hit -.028 in the frame, while Creighton hit .176.
Fourth Set
Similar to the first three sets, the teams traded points early before Creighton made the first move with a 4-0 run to take a 12-7 lead. Rice trailed 20-11 before beginning to chip away at the deficit. A kill from Seay sparked a 7-0 run that tied the set at 23 after the Bluejays called two timeouts. Creighton then earned set point before Dorotik tied the frame at 24. The Bluejays earned one more set point, but the Owls responded with a 3-0 run to secure the match on a Peterson kill.
