Owls Close Road Trip in Fort Worth With Loss to No. 13 TCU

FORT WORTH — Rice volleyball took the second set but dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 13 TCU on Friday night at Schollmaier Arena.
The Owls (6-5) claimed the second set, 25-21, after TCU took the opener, 25-22. The Horned Frogs closed out the match with wins of 25-19 and 25-21 in the final two sets. Rice hit .255 as a team, while TCU hit .349.
Sydnee Peterson led the Owls with 17 kills, while Stephanie Gutierrez added 10. Kaia Mateo paced the offense with a team-high 44 assists.
Mari Furoyama led Rice defensively with 11 digs, while Arissa Smith recorded a team-high six blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
TCU opened the match with a 4-0 run, but Rice quickly responded with eight straight points to take a 10-6 lead, capped by a Peterson kill. The Owls maintained their advantage through the media timeout before TCU answered with a 4-0 run to pull within one. The Horned Frogs eventually tied the set at 19 and regained the lead late, taking the opener, 25-22. The set featured five tied scores and two lead changes.
Second Set
Rice came out strong in the second set, opening with a 3-0 run and taking a 5-2 lead on a Gutierrez kill. The Owls maintained the advantage until TCU tied the set at 14 and briefly took the lead. Rice answered with a 3-0 run to force a TCU timeout, then extended the run to four points following a Horned Frog error. The Owls held the lead the rest of the way to even the match with a 25-21 win. Rice hit .353 in the set, led by four kills from Peterson.
Third Set
TCU jumped out to a 5-1 lead, prompting an early Rice timeout. The Owls gradually chipped away before tying the set at nine on a kill from Amalia Simmons. The teams traded points through the media timeout, with Rice trailing 15-13. TCU maintained its advantage from there and took the third set, 25-19.
Fourth Set
Rice opened the fourth set with a 3-1 advantage and extended its lead to 8-3 on a kill from freshman Bella Lopez, forcing a TCU timeout. Peterson followed with a kill to give the Owls a 10-3 lead. TCU slowly chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied the set at 13. The teams traded points following the tie, with Rice taking a 15-14 lead. The Horned Frogs later used a 9-0 run to build a 24-17 advantage and reach match point. Rice responded with four straight points to cut the deficit to 24-21, but TCU closed out the set, 25-21, to secure the match.
