Volleyball Earns Fifth Consecutive Sweep

Remain unbeaten in C-USA play
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls volleyball team won their fifth consecutive match and ran their set winning streak to 15 straight with a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-20) victory over UAB Sunday afternoon from Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice senior outside hitter Nicole Lennon led the Owls' attack with 14 kills (.273) while sophomore Ellie Bichelmeyer contributed seven kills. The Owls (6-3, 5-0) remained unbeaten in Conference USA by holding a fourth straight opponent to a hitting percentage of .200 or less, limiting the Blazers to just a .150 clip.
Junior setter Carly Graham distributed 34 assists and was one of four Owls with seven or more digs.
The Owls totaled 10.0 team blocks, their second-highest output of the season, with Anota Adekunle, Bichelmeyer, and Satasha Kostelecky each collecting four rejections.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
The Owls erased an early 10-5 deficit by answering back with 10-4 run of their own and never trailed again. Lennon led the way with four kills while Bichelmeyer chipped in three herself. Rice won the frame 25-21 despite hitting just .184 thanks in large part to five service errors by the Blazers.
Set 2
The two teams played to 10 ties and four lead changes in a very competitive game which Rice eventually won, 27-25. Lennon (5 kills) and Bichelmeyer (4 kills) paced the offense and Rice's defense totaled 5.0 team blocks, holding the Blazers to a .098 hitting percentage. The Owls held serve with UAB leading 25-24, scoring three consecutive points on a kill from Sahara Maruska, a block by Bichelmeyer/Adekunle, and an ace from Elizabeth LaBue.
Set 3
Lennon (5 kills) and Adekunle (4 kills) combined for nine kills on 14 attacks and Graham dished out 15 assists in Rice's 25-20 match-clinching victory. The Owls had their best offensive set of the day, hitting .306 as a team while holding the Blazers to .147 hitting.
