HOUSTON — Rice was held to just 28.0% from the floor as the Owls fell at No. 15/14 Houston, 79-46, Friday night from the Fertitta Center.
The Story
The game began with Max Fiedler finding Carl Pierre for a dunk before the Cougars scored eight straight points. Travis Evee connected on his first of three, three-pointers to cut the lead in half, but the Owls were held scoreless over the next eight minutes as UH went on a 14-0 run. Jake Lieppert stopped the run with a three-pointer before six straight UH points pushed the lead to 20. Lieppert connected on a jumper, but Houston hit three consecutive three-pointers. Evee then scored five of the next seven points, but the Cougars scored five straight to close the half as Rice went into the break trailing, 44-15.
Rice came out in the second half and Pierre immediately found Fiedler for a layup. Houston made a three and Terrance McBride answered with a triple of his own. But the Cougars scored nine of the next 11 points, holding the Owls to 31 second-half points.
The Stats
Rice was held to 28.0% from the field and 25.8% from three. Houston connected on just 41.8% from the floor and 33.3% from three. Rice was outrebounded, 42-to-39.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"All the credit goes to Houston. They got us early and we couldn't dig out of the hole. Against good teams on the road, that's hard to do. They shot it well, they did what they do defensively. They really pushed us out high on the floor. Our shots were quick. I thought that would be the game plan and that we would handle it better. Having some veteran guards, we didn't handle it like I hoped, obviously. Then things just got away from us."
