HOUSTON — Junior midfielder Delaney Schultz's golden goal in the 92^nd minute gave Rice a 2-1 overtime victory over UAB, Friday night from Holloway Field.

The Details
Rice thought it had an early lead when, in the third minute, second year freshman forward Vyviene Spaulding headed in a cross from junior midfielder Serena Pham. However, she was called for offsides. Spaulding had another chance in the 12^th minute, sending a blast from in close. But a UAB defender was there to block it before it reached the net. The Owls then struggled to get the offense going for most of the half. But in the closing minute, Rice finally broke through. Senior defender Caleigh Page's throw-in went to Schultz, who tipped the ball over her head toward the net where sophomore forward Izzy McBride knocked it into the back, sending Rice into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

UAB came out firing in the second half. After junior goalkeeper Bella Killgore made a save on Asha Zuniga's header, Stella Kiss tied the match in the 51^st minute, converting on Carlyn Presley's cross. UAB had a chance to take the lead just a minute later when Laura Zemberyova rang a shot off the right post and the rebound went straight to Carlyn Presley. But she sent it wide, preserving the lead. Page almost gave the Owls the lead back in the 68^th minute when her shot from the left side sailed just past a diving Anika Toth and wide of the net. Rice's best chance came in the 82^nd minute when Spaulding chased down the ball and sent a shot toward the net, but it went just wide, and the match headed to overtime.

But Rice needed less than two minutes to send everyone home happy as after Natalie Gorji's cross went off a UAB defender an over the goal line, Pham hit a perfect corner kick toward the front of the net where Schultz headed it into the left corner for the win.

What Head Coach Brian Lee Had to Say
"Conference games especially are going to be tight in college soccer. It's just one, one-goal game after another. You don't have to play great, especially if you're Delaney (Schultz), if you're a big-time scorer. It wasn't her best game. It wasn't the team's best game. But, she came away with a goal and an assist and got it done when it mattered."

Rice heads back on the road next Thursday, Oct. 14, when it travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face Southern Miss. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be livestreamed on CUSAtv.
