DENTON, Texas — 110 minutes could not decide a winner as Rice and North Texas played to a 1-1 draw in both team's regular season finale, Thursday night at the UNT Soccer and Track & Field Stadium. With the draw, Rice clinches the West Division second seed in next week's Conference USA Tournament.
The Details
Bella Killgore had the first chance of the game in the third minute when, after a North Texas foul, her free kick went just over the crossbar. North Texas then recorded four straight shots, the last one in the eighth minute that sailed past a diving Bella Killgore and just left of the post. In the 25th minute, Killgore had her second free kick again sail just over the crossbar. Killgore then saved a goal in the 32nd minute, punching out Connor Barker's attempt that was headed toward the top of the net. However, in the 40th minute, North Texas was called for a penalty in the box and the Owls were awarded a penalty kick. Killgore made it count, sticking it in the left corner as Rice went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
UNT immediately had a scoring chance in the first minute of the second half when Jenna Shelly stole a pass in front. But her shot went over the net. North Texas evened the match in the 65th minute as Olivia Klein dribbled past two Rice defenders and sent a shot into the left corner of the net. The Mean Green peppered the Owls in the second half, including hitting a post in the 88th minute. But Killgore kept them off the board and the teams headed to overtime.
North Texas almost ended it a minute into overtime when Klein's attempt hit the crossbar. Shiloh Miller then gave Rice a chance in the 96th minute, but her shot went wide. After the teams headed to a second overtime, North Texas had an opportunity in the 103rd minute, but she sent it just over the crossbar. Neither team could get off a shot the rest of the way as teams played to a draw.
