HOUSTON — Junior Delaney Schultz headed in a corner kick in the 102nd minute to give Rice a 2-1, double-overtime victory over Middle Tennessee on Senior Night at Holloway Field.
The Details
Rice came out firing from the opening kick. Junior Madison Kent had three great chances in the first 12 minutes, sending two wide and one over the net. In the next 10 minutes, Schultz made a move to split the defense and get an open look, but her shot went wide right. Four minutes later, junior Serena Pham had a chance from just outside the net, but her attempt was high. But in the 18th minute, second-year freshman Natalie Gorji finally made one count as sophomore Shiloh Miller headed a perfect pass to her and she buried it into the right corner to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Bella Killgore almost gave Rice a two-goal advantage in the 41st minute when she rang her free kick off the crossbar and it went into halftime with the advantage.
But in the second half, Middle Tennessee turned the tables on the Owls. The Blue Raiders got four shots in the first 10 minutes with Killgore making a pair of saves. In the 60th minute, Rice finally recorded a shot when Schultz's header went wide. Ten minutes later, Rice was called for a foul and Middle Tennessee was awarded a penalty kick. However, Killgore was up to the task, diving to her right to make the save. But just four minutes later, the Blue Raiders tied things up when Cambell Kivisto worked her way toward the middle and put one just inside the right post. Rice had one final chance in regulation, but Killgore's free kick was high and the teams went to overtime.
The teams battled in the first overtime with Schultz getting the only chance, sending a header left of the net. Two minutes into the second overtime, Rice was awarded a corner kick. Pham's attempt sailed toward the left corner to a waiting Schultz who headed it into the back of the net and sending the Owls home with the victory.
