Bowling Green, Ky. — Rice and WKU played an evenly-matched game for most of the night, but in the end, the Owls fell 2-0, Saturday night at the WKU Soccer Complex.
The Details
Both teams had chances early in the game. In the fourth minute, WKU's Katie Erwin had a shot that Bella Killgore came out to make the save on. In the 16th minute, Vyviene Spaulding found Delaney Schultz right in front of the net, but the WKU keeper made the save. After the teams spent most of the first half battling for possession, Rice began to apply some pressure late. Schultz again had a chance in the 32nd minute from just outside the box, but again the keeper made the save. However, in the 41st minute, WKU was awarded a penalty kick, and Avery Jacobsen made it count, putting it in the left corner as the Lady Toppers took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Rice started the second half getting three shots in the first 10 minutes, but could not convert. The teams then battled over the next 20 minutes with neither team getting a good chance. But in the 75th minute, Katie Erwin broke down the middle and sent a shot toward the left corner, but Killgore was able to get a hand on it and send it past the post. Rice had its best chance to tie the match in the 84th minute when Vyviene Spaulding dribbled down the right side and sent a cross toward the front of the next, but Delaney Schultz just missed it. Finally, with just two minutes to play, Erwin put the game away when she split the defenders in close and beat Killgore for the 2-0 lead.
