HOUSTON — Senior Austin Trammell is one of 47 college football players named to the 2020 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List.
Trammell is one of the top wide receivers and returners in Conference USA. He led the Owls with 60 receptions, becoming the second player in school history to have consecutive seasons with at least 60 catches, and placed second on the team with 726 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions. He ranked fourth in Conference USA in both kick return yardage per game (19.9) and punt return yardage per game (9.3).
Trammell enters the 2020 season ranked seventh on the Rice career list in receptions (126) and kickoff returns (46), eighth in kickoff return yards (1,014) and 10th in receiving yards (1,409).
This is the second watch list that Trammell has been named to this summer, as he was also named to the Hornung Award Watch List. He is also one of three Owls to be named to Watch Lists, joining Blaze Alldredge (Bednarik, Butkus and Nagurski) and Bradley Rozner (Biletnikoff).
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year Division I Texas college.
The Watch List will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists and then up to five finalists. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous winners. A winner will be announced at the end of this year's football season.
Bryce Petty won the inaugural award in 2013, followed by Trevone Boykin (2014), Greg Ward, Jr. (2015), D'Onta Foreman (2016), Baker Mayfield (2017), Kyler Murray (2018) and J.K. Dobbins (2019).
