Trio of Owls Earn C-USA Honors

Mulkey, Ogwumike, and Schwartz all recognized
iorDALLAS – Conference USA announced postseason honors on Monday and the regular season champion Rice Owls women's basketball team was well-represented with Erica Ogwumike and Nancy Mulkey earning All-Conference USA First Team accolades, as well as spots on the five-player All-Defensive Team, and Lauren Schwartz to the All-Freshman Team.
Ogwumike joins former Owl Jessica Kuster as the only players in program history to earn first team honors in three consecutive years. The C-USA Preseason Player of the Year is the league's leading scorer (21.3 ppg) and rebounder (11.6 rpg) during league action while ranking fifth in field goal percentage (51.6%) and seventh in free throw percentage (81.6%). Ogwumike, who was named C-USA Player of the Week a league-high four times, ranked second in C-USA in double-doubles (13). The senior guard is currently one of just three players in NCAA Division I to amass 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. Her selection to the All-Defensive Team is the second of her career.
Mulkey earned spots on the C-USA First Team and All-Defensive Team for a second straight season. The junior center ranks fifth in the nation in blocked shots per game (3.21) and is second on the team in scoring (12.9 ppg) and rebounding (6.9 rpg) during conference play. Mulkey has posted three or more blocks in a game 13 times this season and ranks fourth in the league in field goal percentage (54.9%) during C-USA play. Mulkey also ranks second during league action in free throw percentage, making 38-of-45 attempts (84.4%).
Schwartz was a three-time C-USA Freshman of the Week averaging 10.1 points per game. Schwartz ranked 11th in the league in field goal percentage (47.7%) during league games, tops among all freshmen and was sixth in free throw percentage (81.6%). The Union, Ky. native has started all 29 games as a true freshman and has scored in double-figures 15 times. She was second on the team in total points (279) during C-USA play. Schwartz becomes the fourth player in program history to earn a spot on the C-USA All-Freshman Team.
The Owls will open up play at the C-USA Championship tournament in Frisco, Texas on Thursday, Mar. 12 when they face the winner of Marshall/Southern Miss in the quarterfinals round.
