Forbes, Simpson-Sullivan Shine at Charlie Thomas Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Rice freshmen Grace Forbes and Tara Simpson-Sullivan posted stellar results Saturday afternoon to lead the Owls at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M.
Forbes, the reigning Conference USA Female Track Athlete of the Week, recorded the ninth-fastest time in the NCAA this season (1st in C-USA) in the 3000m with a victory performance of 9:13.64. Forbes has now won all three races this indoor season and improved her time by nearly 14 seconds in the 3000m from the season opener on Jan. 17.
Simpson-Sullivan, from Penrith, England, broke Tina Robinson's eight-year old school record (18.07m) in the weight throw with a mark of 18.85m to finish third overall and claim the top spot in C-USA. Rice senior All-American Michelle Fokam saved her best for last in the long jump, winning the competition with a leap of 5.89m on her final attempt. The victory was Fokam's third of the indoor season and first in the long jump.
Sophomore Erna Gunnarsdottir finished second overall in the shot put with day's-best throw of 15.65m.
Other personal best marks included Khaya Patel (5000m-17:05.87), Julie Perez (weight throw-17.16m), Ashley Messineo (mile-5:02.51), Stephanie Halow (mile-5:16.12), Alyssa Balandran (800m-2:15.73), Taigen Hunter-Galvan (800m-2:16.58), Nicole Mitchell (800m-2:16.98) and Tanae Dorsett (200m-25.63).
The Owls will compete at the University of Houston's Howie Ryan Invitational next Friday, Feb. 14 in the team's final meet prior to the Conference USA Indoor Championships (Feb. 22-23).
