Gunnarsdottir, Simpson-Sullivan Claim Victories

HOUSTON - Rice throwers Erna Gunnarsdottir and Tara Simpson-Sullivan each recorded victories at the Howie Ryan Invitational as the Owls competed in their final competition before next week's C-USA Indoor Championships.
Gunnarsdottir won her third title of the indoor season with a winning toss of 15.72m (51-07.00) in the shot put while Simpson-Sullivan notched her first collegiate victory in the weight throw with a distance of 18.12m (59-05.00).
Rice recorded seven PR's in total in the small field, which included a second place finish by Ali Goodson (3.70m) in the pole vault. Kylie Swiekatowski and Emily Harrison also cleared 3.70m but in more attempts than Goodson.
Alyssa Balandran led a group of six Owls in the mile with a third place result, second among collegiate runners, with a PR time of 5:01.74. Khayla Patel (5:01.85) placed fourth in that same event. Also establishing a PR was Julie Perez (17.31m) in the weight throw, which was good enough for fourth place.
The Owls will now gear up for the C-USA Indoor Championships, which will take place Feb. 22-23 in Birmingham, Alabama.
