Fokam Victorious at Houston Invitational

HOUSTON - Rice senior All-American jumper Michelle Fokam claimed her second victory of the indoor season on Saturday to highlight the Owls performance at the Houston Invitational. Fokam matched her season-best mark of 13.05m (42-09.75) to win the invitational portion of the triple jump, a distance which ranks first in Conference USA and 32nd in the NCAA.
Also excelling in jump competition was KC Nwadei, who placed first among collegiate competitors in the high jump with a mark of 1.70m, which ranks second in CUSA. Zinedine Russell was the second-best collegiate competitor in that same event, also clearing 1.70m. Nwadei also placed fourth overall at 12.33m, which ranks fourth in C-USA.
On the track, senior Khayla Patel finished second in the 3000m run with a time of 9:52.47, which currently ranks fifth in C-USA. Senior Hannah Jackson ran a season-best time of 24.20 in the 60m dash, placing fourth among collegiate racers.
The Owls will return to action next weekend when they travel to College Station for the Charlie Thomas Invitational, Feb. 7-8 at Texas A&M.
