The Owls Wore Their High-Tech Suits For Saturday's UH/LSU Time Trials
With the C-USA rehearsal completed Rice sophomore Marta Cano-Minarro showed she is ready for the red carpet. The international standout from Spain won two of the four events she swam Saturday, part of eight total events over a 48-hour period including Friday night's double-dual with No. 17 ranked LSU and host Houston. Saturday's meet was an 'open' time-trial format with no individual/team scoring, but that did not seem to slow Cano-Minarro. She first won the 50-yard freestyle over a starting field of 17 competitors with a time of 23.38, then for grins closed out the meet swimming the 200-butterfly for the very first time of her collegiate career. Cano-Minarro blazed to the wall under the two-minute barrier with a 1:59.85, narrowly missing a spot among the Top 5 times in Rice history.
Owl senior Sarah Nowaski was close to a season-best in winning the 400-individual medley (4:24.47). Freshman Madison Howe swam a season-best 50.58 to place second in the 100-freestyle. Howe joined Kate Nezelek, Sini Koivu and Becca Evans for a second-place in the 200-free relay with the fastest mark in Conference USA this season (1:31.75). Junior Nicole Limberg notched a season best 2:17.01 for a second place finish in the 200-breaststroke. She was also third overall in the 100-breaststroke (1:03.20). Freshman Zoe Spitz was the Owls' top finisher in the 100-backstroke with a 55.37 for third place.
In the above video Rice head coach Seth Huston shared his thoughts after the two-day meet held across town at the Cougar Rec Center Natatorium. The Owls have one more set of time trial races on Feb. 15 before the C-USA Championships in Atlanta beginning Feb . 26.
