Second Half Shooting Dooms Rice at Sam Houston State

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Sam Houston State shot 61.3% in the second half as Rice fell to the Bearkats, 82-69, Saturday afternoon from Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Story
Both teams struggled from the field to begin the game as Rice missed seven of its first nine shots while Sam Houston State was just 2-of-7. Quincy Olivari tied the game at seven, 6:12 into the game. The teams traded baskets over the next 2:44 before back-to-back three-pointers by Cameron Sheffield and Olivari gave Rice its first lead of the game, 17-13. After an SHSU basket, Sheffield made one-of-two free throws. The teams again traded baskets before six straight points by the Bearkats gave them a 25-23 lead with 5:33 to play. However, a layup by Max Fiedler followed by a Travis Evee three-pointer sent the Owls on a 9-2 run to take its largest lead of the half, 34-27. But a Zach Nutall three brought Sam Houston State within 34-30 at the half.
Rice began the second half with a putback from Fiedler off a Tre Clark missed a layup. After two SHSU free throws, Evee made a driving layup. The Bearkats pulled within three, but Olivari made his third three-pointer of the game. Sam Houston State cut the deficit to two, but Rice scored five of the next seven points, capped off by a Chris Mullins three-point play, as the Owls took a 46-51 lead 5:35 into the second half. However, things turned quick, as Rice missed its next five shots while SHSU made six of its next seven to go on a 14-0 run over the next three minutes, to take a 55-46 lead. Mullins broke the run with a three-pointer, but the Bearkats answered with one of their own. Tre Clark made a layup off of a Bearkat turnover, but back-to-back Sam Houston State three-pointers to pushed its lead to double digits. Rice would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the game.

Rice connected on 44.4% from the field and 36.0% from three. It was held to just 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Sam Houston State connected on 52.5% from the floor and 41.7% from three. Rice outrebounded the Bearkats, 38-to-31.
