Olivari leads Rice with 21 points
HOUSTON — Rice sophomore guard Quincy Olivari led the Owls (4-1) with a team-high 21 points of the bench but it was not enough to overcome the New Mexico Lobos in a 72-61 loss Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Story
In the first half the two teams exchanged lead changes six times with New Mexico leading for a little over 11 minutes total. The Owls were able to hang around thanks to the long ball, making 6-of-13 shots from deep (46.2%). Olivari and Travis Evee each hit a pair of three-pointers in the first 10 minutes while Payton Moore and Riley Abercrombie each hit one as well. However, the Lobos were able to establish a low-post threat by scoring 20 of their 31 first half points in the paint. The Owls led 15-10 midway through the opening half following Abercrombie's three-pointer but New Mexico closed on a 21-10 run to lead 31-25 at the break.
The Owls never managed to climb closer than a five point deficit in the second half despite Olivari scoring 15 points over the final 20 minutes.
The Stats
New Mexico outscored the Owls 40-12 in points in the paint and 14-2 in second chance opportunities. The Owls managed to outscore the Lobos in bench points, 37-21, of which Olivari scored 21 points. Rice connected from deep 13 times, marking the fourth straight game they've made 10 or more three-pointers.
